Celebrating the Creativity, Craftsmanship, and Community of the Hobby
Art of Model Railroading (AOMR) is built on a simple belief:
Model railroading is one of the world’s most creative hobbies, and every model railroader has a story worth sharing.
More than trains running around a layout, model railroading brings together history, art, engineering, storytelling, research, design, operations, and personal expression. Every layout reflects the vision, skills, and imagination of its creator.
AOMR exists to celebrate those creators, share their stories, and inspire others to take their own modeling journeys further.
Our Mission
To celebrate, preserve, and advance the art of model railroading by inspiring creativity, sharing knowledge, and fostering community.
Through conversations, educational content, and community engagement, AOMR connects model railroaders with the people, ideas, and experiences that make the hobby special.
Why “Art of Model Railroading”?
The idea that model railroading is an art form is not new. Decades ago, pioneer model railroader Frank Ellison encouraged hobbyists to see their layouts as more than trains and scenery, but as opportunities for creativity, storytelling, and personal expression.
At AOMR, we celebrate that same spirit today. Whether you’re building a layout, researching railroad history, operating trains with friends, creating realistic scenes, or sharing your work with others, you’re contributing to the art of model railroading.
Every layout tells a story. Every model railroader is a creator.
What We Believe
• Creativity matters. Every model railroad is a unique expression of its creator’s vision.
• Community matters. The hobby grows when model railroaders share ideas, experiences, and encouragement.
• Learning matters. Every hobbyist has something to teach and something to learn.
• Every journey matters. There is no single “right” way to enjoy model railroading.
From prototype historians
to freelance railroad builders,
from beginners
to master craftsmen,
every model railroader contributes to the richness of the hobby.
